The Kukui Nut Tree called the Candlenut tree is Hawaii's state tree. Hundreds of years ago, Hawaiians discovered that when the shell of the Kukui nut was removed and the kernels lightly roasted, a clear oil could be pressed out. They used the kernels as candles to create light, hence the nickname "candlenut". They also used the oil for protecting and preserving natural wood and, when ingested, as a way to help cleanse the body of impurities. Externally, Kukui nut oil was discovered to be an excellent penetrating oil and was smoothed on the skin to soothe and soften dry skin. It also aided in healing sunburns and irritations, cuts and scrapes.
